Letters concerning the removal of Samuel B. Woods as commissioner of accounts at the University of Virginia [manuscript], 1886.

In a letter 1886 March 23, J. Richard Wingfield asks Holmes Conrad to prevent Samuel B. Woods from being removed as commissioner of accounts at the University of Virginia by the new Board of Visitors. Woods is "an earnest Democrat" and Wingfield praises his assistance in the recent elections. To remove Woods now "would be to class him as a Readjuster appointee, when the fact is he was appointed solely with regard to fitness, politics in this instance having been ignored." Woods' removal would "be keenly felt and resented by the active young Democrats of the county." Wingfield continues by saying that the new members of the Board "are not political factors--the whole set not worth fifty votes." However, Wingfield acknowledges that "the position of the University is critical and much depends on the judicious management of the new Board." In a letter 1886 May 30, Samuel B. Woods submits his application to be retained as commissioner of accounts at the University of Virginia. Woods states that since his appointment was a nonpolitical one, he "would very much dislike to be retired as soon as my own political party comes into control of the University." In a letter 1886 May 5, George Perkins, J. Richard Wingfield and Thomas S. Martin urge the Board of Visitors to retain Samuel B. Woods as commissioner of accounts for the University of Virginia. Woods "is not only a Democrat, but he has been exceedingly active as such, and has done much valuable work." J. Rich. Wingfield and Thomas S. Martin add paragraphs concurring with Perkins' support of Woods.
